Prayer for a Friend Going Through a Difficult Time

When a friend is going through a difficult time, you may want to help but have no idea what would actually make things better. Perhaps they are dealing with a family problem, disappointment, financial pressure, uncertainty, illness, or several difficulties at once.

You can listen and offer encouragement, but some problems are beyond anything you can solve. Even finding the right words can be difficult when you know your friend is hurting.

Prayer gives you a meaningful way to stand with them. You do not need to understand every part of the situation. You can bring your friend before God, ask Him to meet the needs you know about, and trust Him with the ones you do not.

A Prayer for a Friend Going Through a Difficult Time

If someone you care about is struggling, you can pray for them like this:

God,
I bring my friend before You today. You know what they are going through and how deeply this situation is affecting them.

Please give them strength for what they are facing. Encourage them when they feel discouraged, give them wisdom when they do not know what to do, and provide what they need during this difficult season.

Remind them that they are not alone. Surround them with people who will care for them faithfully, listen when they need to talk, and offer help and encouragement in ways that are genuinely useful.

Show me how to be a good friend to them. Give me wisdom to know when to speak, when to listen, when to offer practical help, and when simply to continue praying.

Please work in the circumstances they are facing and give them hope as they take each next step. Help me remain faithful in carrying this need with them for as long as the journey lasts.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

How to Pray for a Friend Who Is Struggling

Pray for what they have shared with you

Begin with what you know rather than trying to understand every detail. If your friend has told you what is troubling them, bring those specific concerns before God.

If you know only that they are having a difficult time, you can still pray meaningfully. Ask God to give them strength, wisdom, encouragement, provision, and a clear sense of His presence. God knows the parts of their situation that you do not.

Pray for the person, not only the problem

It is natural to ask God to change difficult circumstances. But your friend also has needs while those circumstances remain unresolved.

Pray for patience while they wait, wisdom for decisions, courage for difficult conversations, and strength for responsibilities that still have to be handled. Ask God to protect them from discouragement and help them recognize the support available around them.

If you need help finding words for a particular situation, our prayers for real-life situations can give you additional ways to pray specifically for what your friend is facing.

Let your friend know you are still praying

There is a difference between telling someone you will pray and letting them discover later that you actually remembered.

A brief message such as, “I was praying for you this morning,” can be deeply encouraging. It tells your friend that their struggle did not disappear from your mind when the conversation ended.

Their own prayers already connect them with God. When you begin praying for the same need, that circle widens. The burden has not become more valid because another person knows about it, but your friend now has someone intentionally carrying it alongside them. When families, friends, small groups, and churches pray this way, those individual connections can become a genuine spiritual network of support.

Ask how the situation has changed

Do not assume that the prayer request remains exactly as it began. After some time has passed, ask your friend how things are going.

The answer may have arrived. The original problem may still be there. Something may have improved while another concern has appeared. What began as a prayer for an upcoming decision might now be a prayer for adjusting to the decision that was made.

This is part of allowing a prayer request to have a life. Instead of hearing a need once and leaving it behind, you can follow the journey. Pray when the difficulty begins, update your prayers when circumstances change, and give thanks together when there is something worth celebrating.

Our prayer community resources offer more guidance for carrying needs together and staying connected as prayer requests develop.

Keep praying even when you cannot fix the situation

Friendship can feel frustrating when someone you care about is hurting and there is nothing you can do to remove the problem. But your inability to fix the situation does not mean you have nothing meaningful to offer.

You can listen. You can remain present. You can encourage your friend when opportunities arise. And you can continue bringing their name and their needs before God.

Sometimes supporting a friend through a difficult season is not about finding the perfect thing to say or do. It is about faithfully remembering them, walking alongside them as circumstances change, and being able to say with sincerity, “I am still praying for you.”
