Love Owing Nothing

[Love Fulfills the Law] Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

Romans 13:8 (NIV)

As we ponder on today's verse, the apostle Paul implores us to understand a profound truth. There is one debt that we can never finish paying, and that is the debt of love. He signifies that our interactions with one another ought to be grounded on the undying principle of love.

Why would Paul refer to love as a debt? Normally when we think about debt, it's something we strive to eliminate, to pay off completely so we owe nothing. Yet, God's love shown through Christ is a continuous river flowing without end. Thus, while we receive this everlasting outpouring of love, we are also in constant debt to distribute this same love to others.

This exquisite divine love binds everything together, much like an all-encompassing adhesive. By constantly discharging love, we fulfill the law of Christ, to love our neighbors as ourselves. No other command supersedes it. Love is the one thing we should always owe to each other - not because it is obligatory but because it is the essence of our calling as followers of Jesus Christ.

Today's Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, instill in us the insurmountable love you have for us, that we may, in turn, display it unreservedly to those around us. Help us to understand that it is more than just an act, but a way of living, reflecting your love in all ways. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
