If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
Romans 10:9-10 (NIV)
Our reading today silently beckons us into a place of personal confession and affirmation: to profess with our mouths and believe in our hearts. Shedding light on this act, we understand that these aren't two separate actions but rather, two dimensions of the same action.
The call to use our mouths to confess Jesus Christ as Lord isn't about public displays or empty repetitions. It's about aligning our words — what we openly declare and share — with the transformative reality of the Gospel that has gripped our hearts.
Yet this confession is like a tree without roots if it doesn't spring from a heart that believes. To believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead is to trust in the death-defying love of God. It's a commitment that churns deep within us, anchoring our faith and fueling our profession.
Notice that neither belief alone nor profession alone suffices. True salvation comes when our inner convictions and outward declarations converge in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ. So let our faith not be silent, but let it speak. Let what we profess with our mouths be deeply rooted in our hearts, transforming not only us but also touching lives around us.
Today's Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, Help us to live in the harmony of profession and possession, confessing Jesus as Lord and closing the gap between what our hearts believe and our mouths declare. We thank you for the promise of salvation that clings to such faith. As we navigate the paths of this world, may our words and actions consistently reflect our belief in the resurrected Christ. In Jesus' name. Amen.
