Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.
Luke 9:23-24 (NIV)
In today’s reading, Jesus speaks to us directly about the path of becoming His disciple. These words remind us that discipleship is not a path of ease or of self-indulgence. It is, instead, a journey towards self-abnegation. Christ invites us to deny ourselves, embracing a life that is not about our desires but about God's glory and will.
Our Lord then presents two options: to lose our life for His sake, finding it made anew in Him, or to gain the whole world but forfeit our soul. The latter may seem appealing on the surface, offering superficial pleasures and material gains. But Jesus warns of its futile outcome, risking our ultimate purpose for temporal success.
Herein lies the paradox of the Christian faith—that by giving up our life, we find true life in Christ. This surrender is not a loss but a profound gain. Though the process may be challenging, it is not without reward. Our Lord promises us a life rich in spiritual nourishment, a life of purpose and fulfillment in Him.
Today's Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for teaching us about the cost and reward of discipleship. Strengthen us and guide us as we strive to deny ourselves, pick up our crosses daily and follow You. Help us to forsake worldly gains for the treasures found in serving You. May we lose our lives for Your sake, finding them in You, enriched and fulfilled. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
