[Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time] Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”
Matthew 20: 17-19 (NIV)
Today's verses illuminate a vital and comforting lesson. As Jesus shared his impending suffering and eventual resurrection with His disciples, we are reminded that our journey of faith may involve pain and struggles. However, the promise of victory and everlasting life is the very essence of our Christian faith.
The scripture reading beckons us to acknowledge our cross, whatever it might signify in our lives. It might be a period of illness, loss, distress, or a phase of spiritual dryness. These are our moments on the cross. But just as Jesus rose again, He wants us to take heart, for these trials aren't the end.
In our human nature, it is natural to long for triumph without trials, success without setbacks. But the path of faith laid out by Christ teaches us otherwise. Our victories gain meaning through the adversities we overcome. The joy of the resurrection shines brightly against the backdrop of the cross.
Today's Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, Grant us the strength to bear our crosses with grace, knowing that they are not the end, but a means towards spiritual growth. When the way gets hard, remind us of Your promise of victory and resurrection. May we find solace and courage in the assurance of Your constant presence. Help us to remember that through Christ, the ultimate victory has been won. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
