But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)
Is it not amazing how our reading today illustrates the attributes of a life that is led by the Spirit of God? These virtues - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control - are not mere badges to adorn ourselves with. They are, essentially, the lifeblood of our Christian journey.
Today's verse makes it clear that these are not abilities we cultivate on our own. If we look closely, we will see that they are called "fruits" of the Spirit. Just as a tree doesn't strain to produce fruit but bears them naturally from its essence, so are these spiritual fruits borne in us by the indwelling Spirit.
But what do we do when we look within and find some of these fruits missing or in short supply? It is a call to draw closer to the source - the Holy Spirit. As we abide in Him and He in us, the more of these fruits we will bear.
Indeed, life can be tough, and it's easy to let frustrations override our virtues. But remember, these fruits are not our own doing. They are gifts from the Spirit. Let's strive to stay connected to the source, and in so doing, keep our lives ripe with these beautiful aspects of God’s character.
Today's Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of your Holy Spirit who dwells within us. Strengthen us, Lord, that we may yield to His leading, thus bearing these precious fruits in our lives. Fill us with Your love, joy, peace, and all the other virtues, that we might reflect Your love to those around us. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
