Becoming a Servant Leader speaker

Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

Mark 9:35 (NIV)

Today's scripture reading presents us with a profound truth – true greatness in the Kingdom of God is measured in terms of servanthood, not leadership as the world defines it. Christ, Himself the epitome of a servant leader, lays down this foundational principle for us.

In the backdrop of our reading today, the disciples were engrossed in an argument about who among them was the greatest. Their understanding of greatness was influenced by the worldly perspective where power, prestige, authority, and dominance hold sway. Jesus responds to their question about greatness with a paradigm shift. He flips the world's concept of greatness on its head, making it clear that the path to true greatness lies in becoming the last of all, the servant of all.

Servanthood as defined by Jesus is not about demeaning one's self or simply being taken advantage of. It is about willingly giving up personal rights to love, serve, and sacrifice for others. It's about putting others' needs before ours. This truth is counter-cultural and challenging but it's the path laid out for those who wish to follow Christ more closely.

Today’s Prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus, help us to fully grasp the essence of being a servant, just as you came not to be served, but to serve. Teach us to lay aside our ego, pride, and desire for recognition so that we may serve others humbly, reflecting your love and grace. May our lives embody true servanthood as we strive to serve rather than be served. In your valuable name we pray, Amen.
