Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

James 4:10 (NIV)

Humility is a virtue that the world often overlooks. Our society praises those who are strong, bold, confident, and assertive. Yet, in the kingdom of God, the humble are exalted. Today's verse stresses the importance of being humble before the Lord. To humble ourselves is to recognize our dependence on God, to admit to our weaknesses and let go of our ego and pride.

Being humble doesn't mean that we see ourselves as less valuable. On the contrary, it means recognizing our worth as God's creation and understanding that He is the source of all good things in us. The process of humbling oneself before God involves acknowledging Him as Lord, recognizing His sovereignty, and submitting to His will. It also involves esteeming others above ourselves; looking not only to our interests, but also to the interests of others.

The beautiful promise attached to this virtue is that God gives grace to the humble. He lifts them up in due time. When we surrender our desires, plans, and even our fears to God, He honors that submission with His unfailing love and divine direction. Let us then strive to lean into humility, recognizing our need for God in every area of our lives.

Today’s Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding us today to maintain a humble spirit. Teach us to decrease so You can increase in our lives. Help us to live out the truth that when we surrender all to You, when we acknowledge that we can do nothing without You, then You lift us up. We submit all our concerns, plans, and dreams into your hands, trusting that You will guide us according to Your will. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
