A Lesson in Time

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12 (NIV)
As finite beings, we often become entangled in the web of our temporal existence. We may fall into the habit of measuring our lives by deadlines and appointments, seasons and years, forgetting the eternal perspective encouraged in today's verse. This scripture is a humble request for wisdom to grasp the brevity of our earthly lives and the eternity of the heavenly realm.
When we invite God to teach us to number our days, we are accepting that our human life is limited. This thought should not lead us into despondence, but rather encourage us to live each day with intentionality and purpose. Like well-spent currency, each moment carries the potential for growth, love, and light in our world.
Adopting an eternal perspective helps us to prioritize what matters most – our relationship with God, serving others, and growing in righteousness. It discards the trivialities of our earthly existence and instead fixes our gaze upon the timeless nature of God’s kingdom.
Today’s Prayer:
Heavenly Father, please grant us the wisdom to discern between the temporal and the eternal. Teach us to number our days, that we might truly understand how fleeting life is and focus on what has enduring significance. Let us live to serve You and reflect Your love to the world. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
