Loving Our Neighbor
Feb 21, 2025
The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Romans 13:9-10 (NIV)
Today's passage reminds us of the beautifully simple call to love our neighbor. Yet, how often do we forget this fundamental guideline on our Christian journey? We live in a world that can easily lead us into self-centeredness and indifference towards others. It's so easy to lose sight of the fact that love should permeate all our relationships and actions.
When we look at the different commandments and ethical guidelines outlined in the scriptures, we see that they are all fulfilled in this one commandment: Love your neighbor as yourself. At its core, our faith is not about legalistic observance, but about nurturing this capacity to love - to genuinely care for and respect everyone around us, despite their flaws and differences.
Remembering this profound truth, let's challenge ourselves today to live in such a way where love for our neighbor becomes second nature. Let's strive to actively seek opportunities to show kindness, forgiveness, and compassion. In doing so, we honor God and truly live out His commandments in our lives.
