Thirsting for God
Oct 7, 2025
[Psalm 63] A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah. You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.
Psalm 63:1 (NIV)
Our reading today prompts us to ask ourselves: what are we truly hungering and thirsting after? The world is filled with many things that attempt to satisfy us, but they are only temporary and can never fully quench our deepest desires. The longing we often feel is an echo of a much deeper desire - a yearning for the eternal, for something, or rather someone, who transcends our earthly existence.
The psalmist gives voice to this intense longing in his seeking for God, as if in a dry and weary land where there is no water. The psalmist is not merely speaking about physical thirst, but a spiritual one. As Christians, we can relate to this thirst. We long for the presence of God, and like the psalmist, we too often feel like we are in a desert, parched and longing for the living water that only God can give.
May we, like the psalmist, seek God earnestly, knowing that only in Him can our spirits be truly satisfied. It's a thirst only the Living Water can quench and a hunger only the Bread of Life can satisfy.
Today’s Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, Guide us to seek you with all our hearts, that we may find our true satisfaction in You alone. When we feel like we're wandering in a desert, remind us that Your living water can quench our deep spiritual thirst. Help us remember that our deepest desires are met in Your love and grace. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
