“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Matthew 5:11-12 (NIV)

Considering the reality of persecution, the thoughts that come to mind are hardly ever laced with joy or happiness. But when we look at today's verse, we are confronted with an astonishing perspective of Christ on this issue.

The Lord Jesus didn't promise a life devoid of trials for those who believe in Him. Instead, He assured us that there would be times of persecution, just as He was persecuted. What is remarkable, however, is that He tells us that in these moments we should rejoice and be glad. Why? Because by standing strong in our faith amid such times, we store up treasures in heaven.

This radical view teaches us to fix our eyes on eternity rather than our fleeting worldly circumstances. We learn to understand that our earthly struggles for His name sake are not in vain. They have an eternal value that far outweighs any temporary hardship.

We are led to embrace joy even in tribulation, knowing that our reward with God is secure. It is a call to resilience, a call to victory. And most importantly, it is a call to follow in our Savior’s steps, living in anticipation of the eternal reward which awaits us in heaven.

Today’s Prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus, help me to remember your words when I face trials for Your name's sake. Grant me the grace to rejoice, knowing that my reward is in heaven. Remind me to always bear in mind the eternal perspective, and to choose joy even in the midst of adversity. In Your holy name, I pray, Amen.
