And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,

Philippians 1:9-10 (NIV)

In our reading today, we discover a powerful prayer by Paul for the Philippians. It is not simply a prayer for material blessings or comfort but for spiritual growth - specifically, growth in love and discernment.

Love is often simplified as an emotion, yet in this context, Paul desired their love to abound more and more in knowledge and all discernment. His intention was for their love to be profound, well founded upon knowledge and discernment, not shallow or superficial. This kind of love is not swayed by mere feelings or circumstances but stands firm on the truth.

Coupled with love, understanding discernment becomes even more vital. Discernment enables us to sift through the many voices, choices, and influences in our lives, identifying what aligns with God's will and what does not. This discernment is what Paul hoped would lead the Philippians to approve things that are excellent, ultimately guiding them to live blameless lives filled with the fruits of righteousness.

Today’s Prayer:

Loving Father, I pray that just like the Philippians, our love too may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight. Help us to discern what is best and may we be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to your glory and praise. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
