The Gift of Age and Wisdom
Sep 9, 2025
Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.
Titus 2:2 (NIV)
As we examine the words of today's verse, there is a powerful message concerning the place and role of older men in our society - an encouragement to uphold steadfast faith, seriousness, self-control, and soundness in faith, love, and endurance.
In a world that often idolizes youth and novelty, these instructions stand as a gentle reminder of the value of age - the wisdom, experience, and grace it brings. The scripture encourages older men not to view their increased years as a decline, but rather as a rise to a higher calling, to exemplify godliness in character and action.
You may not be an older man, but this message still applies. We're all aging, and as we do so, the Bible directs us to relate to those ahead of us in years with honor and respect. There's wisdom to glean from their experiences, lessons to learn from their patience, fortitude to gain from their enduring faith.
Look around you today. Is there an older person you can look up to? Someone whose life radiates the kind of godly maturity mentioned in our reading today? Take time to appreciate them, learn from them, and honor them for their faithfulness.
Today’s Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of age and wisdom among us. May we grow to appreciate and honor the older generation, gleaning wisdom from their experiences. Help us Lord, to aspire and grow into men and women of faith, full of love and endurance, as guided by your word. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
