The Strength of our Salvation

[Psalm 18] For the director of music. Of David the servant of the LORD. He sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said: I love you, LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Psalm 18:1-2 (NIV)
In today's reading, King David beautifully captures the essence of God's identity in his proclamation of faith. He presents a personal and thorough understanding of God as not merely an abstract concept but a living, breathing entity who is actively involved in our lives.
The metaphor of "my rock," "my fortress," and "my deliverer" powerfully elucidates God's unfaltering support and protection. We may lean on Him during times of weakness, retreat to Him for safety during trials, and trust in His ability to deliver us from all adversities.
A close look at our reading today uncovers that David did not just perceive God as an external protector or helper. He viewed God as being intimately interwoven with his own identity – God was his very strength and shield. What an extraordinary promise for each of us! We're not asked to navigate this world in our own strength. Instead, our Heavenly Father offers His infinite strength to equip and sustain us through our individual and collective journeys.
