Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.

1 John 4:20-21 (NIV)

In our reading today, the Apostle John makes a profound claim about love. He asserts that it's impossible to truly love God, whom we have not seen, if we don't love our brothers and sisters, whom we see daily. This challenging truth illuminates the profundity of Christian love. Our relationship with God is deeply intertwined with how we treat other people.

The scripture today compels us to look beyond mere declarations of faith and love for God. It pushes us to act, to show our love for God through our concrete actions towards those He loves—our neighbors. Loving others, therefore, becomes a measure of our love for God.

So let's self-assess today, not based on our prayers, religious observances, or proclaimed faith, but on our actual demonstration of love. How do we treat others? Are we patient, kind, forgiving, supportive, and loving? Or are we caught up in our world, forgetting to extend grace to others? If we strive to love others honestly and wholly, we fulfill a divine command and thereby express our authentic love for God.
