Fasting to Focus Your Prayer
Jan 27, 2026
Fasting pairs physical discipline with spiritual focus. It is not a way to impress God but to make room for Him. In Scripture, fasting often accompanies repentance, guidance, and intercession. When the body says, “I’m hungry,” the spirit replies, “I’m hungry for God.” Choose a wise approach for your health and season. Options include skipping one meal weekly, daylight fasting, or abstaining from a non?food comfort (social media, streaming) that consumes attention. If you have medical conditions, consult a professional and consider a non?food fast. Set a clear purpose: repentance, clarity for a decision, deeper intimacy, or intercession for someone. Tie each hunger pang to a short prayer—“Lord, meet me here,” or a verse you’re memorizing. Keep water nearby, and plan simple, unhurried moments with God. Let fasting shape your heart: notice impatience, self?reliance, or anxiety that surfaces, and bring it to the Lord. Break the fast gently and with thanksgiving. Consider journaling what you learned and any answers or guidance you sensed. Start small, stay humble, and let love be the measure. If fasting makes you irritable with people, you’re missing the point—choose mercy over rigor and begin again tomorrow.
