Listening Prayer: Hearing God
Jan 25, 2026
Listening prayer is not emptying your mind; it’s attending to God. Scripture shows a God who speaks—through His Word, by His Spirit, and within the community of believers. Our posture is humility and discernment. Prepare by opening the Bible first. Read a short passage and ask, “What does this teach about God? What response is He inviting?” Then be still. Set a gentle timer (five–ten minutes) to listen without rushing. If thoughts wander, return to a simple tether: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” Record impressions briefly—words, scriptures, names. Hold them up to three tests: (1) Scripture—does it align with God’s Word? (2) Christlikeness—does it reflect Jesus’ character and produce love, humility, and holiness? (3) Counsel—do mature believers confirm it? Listening prayer grows with practice. Expect quiet more than fireworks. Over time, you’ll notice recurring themes and timely confirmations. When appropriate, ask permission before acting on what you sense, especially if it involves others. God is not hurried; neither are His invitations. End with gratitude and obedience: “Lord, thank You for speaking. Help me do what You’ve shown.”
