Seeking Wisdom:
Lessons from Solomon's Prayer

In a moment that would shape not only his reign but his legacy, Solomon is given a divine opportunity: “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” (1 Kings 3:5). It’s a blank check from God. And what Solomon asks for reveals the posture of his heart—and a model for how we too can pray in the face of responsibility, pressure, and uncertainty.

He begins not with a request, but with reverence: “You have shown great kindness to your servant David my father… and now you have made your servant king.” Solomon acknowledges God’s faithfulness to the generation before him and recognizes that his position is not something earned, but something entrusted. This is the foundation of wise prayer: remembering God’s goodness and approaching Him with humility.

Then Solomon admits what many leaders never would: “I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties.” This confession isn’t self-pity—it’s spiritual clarity. Solomon sees the weight of what he’s been called to and recognizes he cannot carry it alone. When we feel overwhelmed by our roles—whether in parenting, leadership, or decision-making—this kind of honesty opens the door to divine help.

Finally, Solomon makes his request: “Give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.” He doesn’t ask for power or wealth or ease. He asks for understanding—because true wisdom is knowing how to apply God’s truth to life’s complexities.

This prayer teaches us how to approach God when we don’t know what to do next:

  • Start with gratitude—remember where God has brought you.
  • Confess your limitations—not to disqualify yourself, but to invite God in.
  • Ask for wisdom—not just knowledge, but the ability to live and lead with insight, discernment, and grace.

God was pleased with Solomon’s request—and He still delights in answering prayers like this today. Scripture promises, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God… and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5)

So whatever decisions lie ahead, whatever burdens weigh on your shoulders, pray like Solomon. Ask for a discerning heart. And trust that the God who gave wisdom to a young king is still eager to guide you today.
