Living to Lose, Losing to Live
Jun 27, 2025
For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.
Matthew 16:25 (NIV)
Our reading today presents us with an exceptional paradox of the Christian faith. This teaching, given by our Savior Jesus Christ, compels us to reconsider our understanding of gain and loss. His words are nothing short of radical, urging us to abandon our innate and societal definitions of success.
We may aspire for worldly achievements: wealth, power, prestige, or comfort. However, according to Jesus' teaching, the way to true life and fulfillment is not through accumulation but through surrender.
The world may see it as a loss when we put others before ourselves, when we sacrifice our resources for the less privileged, or when we choose integrity over dishonest gain. Yet, this is the path Jesus trod. He, who had everything, became nothing so that in Him, we could gain everything.
In embracing this counter-cultural mindset, we gain something of far greater value - a life full of purpose, peace, and abundant love. This is the essence of the Christian journey, the path towards a meaningful and fulfilled life, leading us closer to God’s Kingdom.
