Guiding with Love and Respect
Jun 18, 2025
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Ephesians 6:4 (NIV)
Our reading today paints an encouraging picture of the parent-child relationship, one rooted in love, wisdom, and faith. As parents, it's all too easy to emphasize the rules, punishments, and rewards in our bid to raise upstanding children. However, today's verse calls us to a higher standard - fostering love and respect in our households above all else.
The Apostle Paul urges parents, particularly fathers, not to provoke their children to anger, but to bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. This doesn't mean we avoid correction or ignore misbehavior. Instead, it means we approach our role as parents with graciousness, understanding, and patience, correcting where necessary but always quickly leading back to love.
In practical terms, this might mean taking time to explain the reasons behind our rules, allowing age-appropriate room for independence, and always reinforcing that our love is unchanging, regardless of behavior. Guiding with love and respect is a beautiful reflection of how God parents us, with kindness and compassion, setting boundaries that ultimately serve our growth and well-being.
