Listening With Patience
May 25, 2025
[Listening and Doing] My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
James 1:19 (NIV)
Today's verse encourages us to embody three crucial virtues: swift to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. These words serve as a guide to living a meaningful Christian life. In our fast-paced world, it is easy to quickly respond, react, and sometimes, regrettably, retaliate. But God is calling us to do the opposite; to slow down and listen carefully before we speak or act.
Being 'swift to listen' speaks to the necessity of empathy and understanding in our conversations and interactions with others. When we truly listen, we get a window into another person's soul—their thoughts, fears, and feelings. We emulate Christ, who always listened and responded with love, wisdom, and compassion.
'Slow to speak' is about exercising discretion and restraint in our speech. Too often, we talk more than we listen, and miss opportunities to learn from others or to offer comforting silence. Remember, powerful and impactful words are often born from quiet and reflective moments.
Lastly, 'slow to anger' is an invitation to cultivate patience and grace. Anger hinders love and sows discord. Let’s strive to spread peace, just as Jesus did throughout His earthly ministry.
