[Life by the Spirit] You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.

Galatians 5:13 (NIV)

What a wonderful inspiration we find in today's verse regarding our Christian liberty. We are reminded that our freedom is not given for selfish ambition or to gratify our fleshly desires, but rather as an invitation to serve one another in love.

It's easy for us to misuse this divine liberty as an excuse to satisfy our own whims. However, scripture reminds us that we have been set free by the grace of Jesus Christ not for our personal indulgence, but to humbly and selflessly serve others.

Christ paid the ultimate price on the cross so that we may live freely. He does not bind us with rules and regulations, but instead calls us into a relationship of love. It is in this devoted relationship that we should voluntarily and happily use our freedom to edify and serve each other.

Let us always remember that Christ’s freedom doesn’t authorize us to sin, but it compels us to extend love and service to others with selflessness and humility. It is in serving others that we truly experience the depth and breadth of the freedom Christ has given us. Let us aim to live in such a manner, walking in love, every day.
