Paying What is Due
Apr 18, 2025
This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
Romans 13:6-7 (NIV)
The Christian life, as highlighted in today's verse, is not an isolated one but one that exists and contributes within the broader society. We are reminded of our interaction with societal authorities and our obligation to honor them. This may come in the form of taxes, respect, or obedience to the law. God ordains these authorities, and when we submit to them, we submit to His order.
The essence of paying what is due is not just about monetary taxation but also includes giving respect and honor where and when it is due. Just as Christ gave unto Caesar what was Caesar's and unto God what is God's, so we should live in a way that exhibits respect for our leaders and adherence to their rightful authority, without compromising our primary allegiance to God.
Our reading today, therefore, serves as a gentle reminder to fulfill our earthly responsibilities while keeping our heavenly focus. It encourages us to be good citizens, not out of fear of punishment, but out of conscious understanding and recognition of divine order.
