For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,

Philippians 1:29 (NIV)

Our reading today reminds us of an often overlooked truth. It is not just faith that has been given to us as a gift, but suffering too. We, as followers of Christ, are privileged to believe in Him, yet we also share his sufferings. This concept might seem perplexing, as we often view suffering as punishment or trial, not a blessing.

Nonetheless, it is through suffering that our faith matures, our dependence on God is reinforced, and the reality of His comfort and strength is realized. Suffering brings us closer to Christ, into a deeper understanding of His sacrifice for us. It is a tool God uses to shape our character and mould us into His image. Suffering is not a sign of God’s disfavor, rather it is an indication of our identity as co-heirs with Christ.

Therefore, let us embrace both these gifts – faith and suffering – with open hearts. For in doing so, we participate in the grand narrative of God's redemptive plan, reflecting Jesus in our lives more accurately.
